New research indicates that a daily snack of fat-free popcorn can help dieters maintain reduced-calorie eating plans while still feeling full and satisfied. While any reduced-calorie diet can lead to weight loss, the biggest key for sustaining weight loss momentum is satisfaction with the eating program. The study showed that even after eating popcorn daily for 12 weeks, people were highly satisfied with it and attributed part of their dieting success to the snack.
The simple act of seeing the large amount of popcorn helped study participants maintain their weight loss programs without feeling like they were on a restrictive diet. Participants reported healthier snacking habits and 73% said that snacking on popcorn helped them feel more emotionally satisfied than their usual snacks.
Katherine West, CEO of Healthient, commented, "Microwave popcorn has been one of America's favorite snacks for years because it is delicious and satisfying. Our popcorn has all of the best nutrition benefits of whole grain, zero trans-fat, and no added diacetyl flavoring," she added. Diacetyl gives popcorn its butter taste. The US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has long advised that when used as an artificial butter flavoring one should avoid inhaling it over a long period. Bronchiolitis obliterans, often termed "popcorn worker's lung," an uncommon and serious lung disease, has been found in workers of several factories that produce artificial butter flavorings.
