The U.S. Centers for Disease Control issued a statement recommending equally DEET, picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus. Also a published study found in both cage and field studies that a product containing 40% oil of lemon eucalyptus was just as effective as products containing high concentrations of DEET.
Citronella oil is a renowned plant-based insect repellent, and has been registered for this use in the United States since 1948. The United States Environmental Protection Agency considers oil of citronella as a bio-pesticide with a non-toxic mode of action. Lemongrass oil is also an insect repellent and research shows that citronella oil and lemongrass oil both have strong antifungal properties.
