    What is Mageu?

Mageu, also known as maHewu, amaRhewu or amaHewu is a traditional non-alcoholic African drink and is available in both liquid and powder form. Its taste and texture varies significantly among the many diverse cultures. It is a refreshing drink that’s suitable for all ages. Made from fermented maize pap(porridge) it was until a number of years ago only ‘brewed’ at home. It is now also commercially manufactured in different flavours such as Banana, Strawberry, Pineapple and Chocolate and is available in most supermarkets in its liquid form. However, the fact that it needs to be refrigerated impacts negatively on the popularity of the liquid product.

It is often used as part of the daily diet and is believed to be a great energy booster, which makes the commercial produced ‘instant powder’ version a much more viable option, because unlike the liquid version, it requires no refrigeration until after it has been mixed. Another benefit of the powder version is that you need only mix the quantity that you require at that moment in time while the balance of the powder can be stored in a suitable container for later use.
    What is Mageu Image

Mageu is very popular in situations of intensive labour as it provides almost instant sustenance. A full serving consists of 80 gm powder and it is thus easily carried on the person and only requires about 450 ml of water.

A-Maize-ing Mageu is reasonably priced to the end user. There are few meals that can compare with its nutrition or price. Mageu is mainly used by the indigenous people of Southern Africa who believe that it will give them energy to fulfill a hard day’s work. They also believe that Mageu has certain healing properties.
